Fits and starts
Leaders in the state Legislature want a comprehensive look at gambling in Florida. One has complained the state allowed expansion of gaming by "fits and starts." Here are some of them:
1931: Legislature approves pari-mutuel gambling.
1979: Seminole Tribe opens bingo hall in Hollywood, Fla.
1981: U.S. Supreme Court affirms Seminole Tribe's right to high-stakes bingo. Tampa bingo hall, now the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, opens.
1986: Voters approve state lottery. The once-a-week drawing grows into a myriad of drawings and 60 scratch-off games.
1988: Indian Gaming Regulatory Act passed by U.S. Congress, regulates conduct of gaming on Indian land.
1990: Legislature approves simulcasts of live pari-mutuel events from other tracks in the state.
1996: Legislature authorizes poker as a low-stakes parlor game permitted at pari-mutuels.
2004: Voters allow pari-mutuels in Miami-Dade and Broward counties to have slot machines.
2010: Legislature allows "no-limit" poker.
2010: Gov. Charlie Crist signs Seminole compact, which allows Class III Las Vegas-style games at reservation casinos.
2011: State regulators allow track in tiny Panhandle town of Gretna to offer barrel racing, typically an inexpensive rodeo event. Track is classified as holding live racing, opens card room, seeks slot machines. Race schedule canceled in 2012.
